Hello! I'm a Yankee, and I've considered moving to Australia or NZ... Well, more of a dream.. but you know. ;)
I have a 4 year old son who is high functioning ASD (PDD-NOS). I was wondering what kind of services were available/mandated by both the federal and local governments.
I guess it's the fear of the unknown... I know what I can get in the USA... Is it "safe" to move anywhere else? =sigh=

Richard,
Iam a limey to you Americans (or 'Pom' to the Kiwis) and I have lived here for 4 years. I live in Wellington. Firstly I would highly recommend NZ as the best country in the world to live and bring up any children (AS or not). I have 4 kids and I haven't had a bad day here yet! There is also an organisation called Cloud 9 and I think their website is www.withyoueverystepoftheway.com Email Sharon there and tell her Dale recommended them. She may be able to help you. Good Luck |

Hi Guys
Thanks Dale for the mention.
I arrived in NZ from the UK a year ago and find services different here. There seems to be some grey areas in terms of support for our kids. I am based in Wellington and Cloud 9 have been doing research into how ASD friendly schools are in Wellington, and sending information to schools that want to know more. There is alot of good work going on here by parents and professionals still much to do. Inclusive Education is on the agenda but the funding to go with it as other countries is not always there.
Cloud 9 offer support and information to families living with AS. We hold monthly coffee mornings, parent information evenings, social skills courses for teens, network and share information within the AS community and I have lots of other projects on my list! As always funding and resources are an issue. Please feel free to e-mail me with any queries and look on our web site. www.withyoueverysteopoftheway.com or e-mail foundation@entercloud9.com
Bye for now Sharon |

It'd be interesting to hear from other Yankees/Gringos about the differences in NZ from the USA. We have mandated special educational requirements at the Federal level (though, no funding. ha ha!) My state and county also have some other minor requirements. Right now, my son can get free pre-school and pre-kindergarten (age 3-6) because of his PDD-NOS diagnosis and speech/relationship delays.
Luckily, I think my son will be able to be mainstreamed, but with extra therapy. In NZ, is it mostly separate special education, or do they try to integrate as much as possible? Are there any Federal or local mandates for special education, especially ASD?

Hello Richard
I am a kiwi & my boy is 11 & has Asperger. Yes I completely agree with the other correspondence in here, we have a huge amount of Issues & an even bigger amount of, quite genuinely upset parents for very justified reasons. Some of our services have been quite honestly dreadful & for many still are.
However we also have some truly fabulous people in the professionals & government area as well as the support services that are doing fabulous work! My son had a dreadful education until we found the right school - in our case a very small roll skl but I also know of very big roll skl's also doing a great job in supporting our chn.
Yes our chn are mainstreamed as much as they are able etc. We don't have a dedicated ASD skl but that is also being worked on. We do have special education rooms in our skl's. Our government is improving - Check out the Disability Strategy. We also have the ASD Guidelines coming out soon. We have active supports like Cloud 9 & Sharon does a terrific job!!!
Autism NZ are getting there, that I will concede but they are trying very hard to get it right. We also have Partners in Policymaking being supported by our Min of Ed & Min of Health.
We are changing & improving from what we were & I think it is up to us as Individuals to let our teachers etc know what we want.
In my own case ... I have weekly meetings with my teachers - sometimes to discuss issues, sometimes it is just a chance to catch up. I got this because I asked for it & because they know I am willing to communicate with them. If you wish to get in contact with me you can do so via Sharon.
Lorna :-)

Seems to me that there are some options for services and support in the main cities of NZ but in other areas services and support is poor.
Please let me know if this is incorrect. Thank you.
