Autism Unravelled Registered Charity Number 1079491
Autism doesn’t just happen, although it can certainly seem as if it does. Almost overnight you child stops talking, stops playing, becomes overactive, lines up his toys…
No-one can tell you why this has happened, or what to do now that it has. We can’t do that either right now, but through research, we’re moving towards a better understanding of the causes of autism.
Most research into autism spectrum disorders is concentrated on genetics, neurological and psychological studies. But what about the biochemical and physiological issues?
Autism Unravelled is the leading UK charity dedicated to investigating biomedical issues in autism spectrum disorders. It is our aim to support and help to fund research studies where possible and appropriate.
We have already funded a research project at the University of Birmingham that shows how infections can block the formation of a vital enzyme in the detoxification process in autism. This has unravelled a major piece of the puzzle.
Following on from this research, we are about to fund another joint project with the University of Bristol and the University of Birmingham to investigate whether this enzyme has a genetic defect or whether it has been affected by an environmental insult.
As parents and carers ourselves, we know how important it is to be able to share problems and concerns, so you can always call or e-mail us at any time about whatever it is that’s important to you.
If you want to find out more about the biology and physiology of autism and research issues in autism, do think about joining Autism Unravelled. For more information:
