refreshing phycic@SAFe-mail.net (13 Nov 2004 8:00) It sounds to me as if you are describing a child with ASD you will find that you will have to ensure that his concentration is not interrupted he will be very sups table to noise and any small distraction, he will tend to be excellent in some subjects but not in others he might be clumsy, he will be seen as a stubborn sometimes naughty child. He will be under stress most of the time. I it refreshing to see a teacher taking interest in Autism I hope the child receives as much concern when he progresses to high school Education

See if your child has digestion problems, first (6 Sep 2007 4:30) We tried GFCF diet a year and a half-no change....If your child does not have loose stools or digestion problems, the diet probably will not help, but it is worth the try....

Medication Bernadette (24 Sep 2010 3:06) The medications you have listed are all treatment for the epilepsy (fits) and none of the doses you have listed are excessive. They are all below maximum dose. If you reduce these medications the fits will probably increase and he could get very sick. Do not change medications without the supervision of a doctor.
To get the best outcome with a young person with a severe intellectual disability use the person's preferred actiivities as much as possible and incorporate skill development this way.

Help in North Wales??? Mair Morgan (10 Oct 2005 10:15) My nephew, Ray, is 23 and has AS. His symptoms include severe depression bordering on suicidal, sometimes extreme temper tantrums, severe inability to socialise (he can't go out in public when there are young people around, for example), and extreme sensitivity to noise, which changes from day to day - car horns one day, dogs barking the next.
It is heartbreaking to see him live what he calls a 'useless life' and he can't understand the point of being born.
So far, in North Wales, the help he has received has been poor to non-existent. He has had drugs thrown at him, spells in a centre for mentally ill (with adults of all ages and illnesses ranging from severe depression to schizophrenia). He has not been offered any counselling, alternative therapy (such as music therapy and he absolutely loves music) and little or no support has been available to hs mum and grandmother who have themselves become depressed.
Ray is a wonderful human being with enormous amounts of love, kindness and intelligence. I really feel that in the right climate, with supportive, caring adults who can help him deal with his symptoms in different ways, his life would change and he would experience a quality of life that has hitherto been unknown to him.
Please can anyone help or advise???
Mair

Hyperacusis Tom Pearson (8 Nov 2005 21:08) I am afraid I cannot be a great deal of help, but I wonder what he has tried regarding his hypersensitivity to noise? I understand that it is possible to obtain noice-reducing ear-plugs which, rather than simply making everything quieter, can serve to reduce the effect of certain frequencies.
Don't know if that's of any help? There seem to be lots of websites out there about hyperacusis. Have these been of any use?

You are not alone Anne (16 Nov 2005 21:00) Sadly, you are not alone. My son is 19 has AS and ADHD. He is a lovely lad but had accepted verbal and physical abuse from other kids (usually much younger than himself) for his whole life, because he is different. Professionals haven't a clue what to do with such complex children and adults and normally after bouts of depression and suicide attempts, professionals swing in favour of institutions. I have battled against the authorties since the birth of my son to gain recognition for what is a very misunderstood and complex child. As an adult, he is only seen as a problem and I am utterly disgusted in the lack of interest and intelligect of many of the professionals whom I have chased for advise. Basically, there are no answers. Families of children like my son are very lucky if they find help in the community, most of us are just very tired and need some respite but don't want our children drugged up or put away. I sincerley hope that you find someone to offer help and advice. Your nephew is very lucky to have you.

You are not alone Mair (17 Nov 2005 9:04) Anne, thanks very much for your email. It becomes more and more frustrating over time, doesn't it, because we hear of things that are available to children with Asp', but not adults. Ray wasn't diagnosed until he was 16 which meant that he missed out on a lot of help that might have been available to him as a child. I can totally empathise with how you feel. I live in Manchester and my nephew lives at home with his mother and grandmother. I go back regularly and can see how much it takes out of the family, especially when Ray is particularly depressed. I will keep looking for help and will post anything that I find on this site. I hope that you do get the chance to take a breather every now and again and remember that, just like you said, you're not alone. Mair

From Claire in Mid Wales Claire Roberts (20 Nov 2007 11:04) I started to cry when I read your letter. My eldest son is 26 and has AS. He is very similar to Ray. He lives in a flat over the road from our house and is on two lots of medication for anxiety and depression and for panic attacks and social phobia. He has in the past got so angry with his life that he has broken his knuckles punching the walls (rather than hurt a person,) and they are lumpy now as they never were attended to at the time.
He has a support worker visit twice a week to help him go out shopping and to sort out any finances and forms. He loves music and he has three computers set up in his livingroom which he is always going on, mainly to listen to 100's of music tracks from his computers. I think the way forward for Ray will centre around what works for him and the avoidance or suppression of what makes him worse. Has Ray tried small earplugs he could wear during the day, or headphones when he is at home, to be able to avoid hearing excess noise? If Ray can analyse what he sees as good in his life and what he wants for himself from his life, then there might be a way forward. It would help him to be in charge of his life, not other people. If he also looks at what he finds impossible to deal with or needs help coping with, and then how to do that, perhaps that might also work. It seems to me that bite size is the way forward! One thing at a time, don't overload or look forward to far. My son has also said he does not see the point of his life. For him, I find that day to day goals work, building up towards larger goals in little steps, and preparing a stratedgy for coping when things go wrong, eg: for Ray a certain music track to listen to, on his person at all times with an ipod?( Of his choice) Have you contacted Professor Frasier in Cardiff? If not, he might be able to help. There is also a wonderful woman I saw at a seminar called Phoebe and I can't remember her last name, but she is an expert on Aspergers and Autism so I think she would be easy to trace in AS circles and she would definately be of help because she is so knowledgeable. Good luck to Ray. I am wondering if my son and Ray would both benefit from contacting each other ( email contact) but I don't know what each of them would think about that. Best wishes from Claire.

search for special nursery Susana (27 Jun 2006 11:28) Hi everyone. My son is 2 and half and is autistic. He goes to a normal nursery at the moment. can you help Spencer Symmons (12 Sep 2006 15:58) Hi Susanna, Your post caught my eye. I have a 30 month old who my wife thinks is showing many classic signs of autism. We have an appointment with a specialist in October but I would welcome any pointers from you on the symptoms your son started showing to lead you to a diagnosis. Our son pretty much only eats yogurts and porridge and is still in nappies but he is very loving, keeps and reacts to eye contact, seeks hugs, engages and plays well with other kids in soft play (as long as his borther) so the signs are confusing for us. He is small in his growth and still hasnt spoken a legible word yet although he does kind of say dadda. Any help or advice or contacts you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Please could you reply to my hotmail address. Many many thanks.

Hi Spencer Susana (12 Sep 2006 17:40) Sorry, I didn't see your email address on this bulletin board. Autism is a apectrum disorder meaning that can be from very mild to very severe and every autistic child is different. They have some features in common like difficulties with social interactions, speech delay and some compulsive, repetitive behaviour. Something that i've noticed reading through many web pages and parent's comments about their kids is that they often don't reply to their names when called as if were deaf. The fact that your son is still in nappies and has a limited diet only wouldn't worry me. However , the best thing is to get in touch with your health visitor or your GP and get to see a pediatrician. He might have a different problem or just a "normal" delay in speech .If the diagnosis is autism then the health visitor would give you all the information and support group numbers, etc... in your local area. I noticed my son might be autistic when he was about 2. He wouldn't reply to his name, no speech at all apart from 1 word: apple. Doesn't seem to be understanding when somebody talks to him. He is not interested in other kids and doesn't play with toys as you expect a 2 1/2 year old child. He doesn't understand emotions, doesn't get happy to see me or sad when I leave. never comes for a cuddle but doesn't mind if I initiate a cuddle. That is just a brief description of the things my son does. The pediatrician has seen him and we are awating for speech and language therapy and all the other "therapies" that he will need. Don't despare, see the specialist first. Whatever it is if he likes to interact with his brother and play together and cuddle its a very good sign. Let me know if I can be of any more help. Susana

(13 Sep 2006 9:31) Thanks Susana. It certainly sounds like my son show all the symptons. My wife, being a mother is convinced something is wrong though so we will seek specialist advice. A speech therapist with strong autism knowledge is due to come to us at the end of the month. Symptons he shows (which i think maybe could be early signs of autism are)...wont look relatives/strangers in the eyes often (although he does with us all the time), responds to his name about 50% of the time with us, very repetitive behavioous opening and shutting doors, fascination with water, walking round with shirt in mouth, lately stopped eating his favourite porridge and savoury foods and for the last 4 days will only eat yoghurts and tantrems when he sees or smells something else, zero speech at over 30 months, very very small head and body development and has always been at the very bottom of growth charts. But on the other side of the coin if i put my arm out to him he nearly always runs to me and wants and gives back a hug and loves a kiss (but he wont do this with anyone apart from my wife and I). I`m also not sure if this is affection of him thinking he is playing a game. He also loves playing with other kids and with his brother Ben although he does sometimes throw stuff at Ben (but i guess this is normal with young brothers!!). All in all very confusing as to whether he is or isnt autistic. All we want is to know whats wrong, like everyone else i guess if it is autism we will deal with it, if its something else we will deal with it...we just want someone to tell us. He`s already seen our GP, a pediatrician, been tested for loads of stuff (Fragile X amongst others) but still no diagnosis. I`m now starting to think silly things like links to his MMR etc. Thank you ever so much for your time Susana.

AS/HFA maia (22 Feb 2007 11:24) Hi There,
Just in case anyone is interested I have set up a petition on the No. 10 website about the woeful lack of statutory resources for adults with ASD's in Wales. I know this is a Welsh Assembly matter but, if the petition gets 100 signatures, then the Government is obliged to respond and (hopefully) to pass it to the WA for their comment.
Here is the info that I sent out about it :
Hi, This is a just a quick email to let people know that I've set up a petition on the Government No. 10 website petitioning the Government for better provisions for adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD's) living in Wales. You are only allowed to type 1,000 characters into the petition and so it doesn't say as much as I'd have liked it to but I think I managed to get the central message across. The petition will run for one year. In order to have a petition forwarded to the Prime Minister, you need to get 100 signatures. If you would like to read my petition and, hopefully, also to sign it, it is located here : http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Autism/ If you know of anyone else who might be interested in supporting this petition I would be very grateful if you could pass the information on to them. Thank you so much.

ABA Programme vacancy? Hannah (25 Feb 2008 0:13) Hi there,
I am a 24 year old Psychology graduate currently searching for work as an ABA tutor. At present I am in New York to gain ABA work experience at the Manhattan Children's Centre for the next couple of weeks; I hope that this experience will help me gain employment when I return to England (I eventually hope to complete a Master's in ABA to become BCBA accredited). My degree covered ABA for children with autism - which is how I became interested in the field - and I have read a lot around the area since completing my degree. I have one year's work experience as a teaching assistant - my time was mainly used to help children with SEN. I just thought I would e-mail in case you anticipate taking on new tutors in the future, with the hope that you may be able to keep me in mind! I live in Romford, Essex, and am willing to commute (whereabouts in North Essex are you?). I have been offered tutor positions on several home programes currently being run in Essex, but still have some available hours during the week. I hope your home programme is running well. Kind regards,
Hannah Carr

ABA tutor needed John Duffy (29 Oct 2007 10:42) Hi Sarah
If you don't have any luck here you could try http://www.autismjobs.org/s-vacancies.asp, where you can advertise. Several parents are advertising just now.
Disclaimer - I run the site, and there is a charge, hence ny suggestion to hang on to see if you have any luck here first :-)
Best wishes, John

Need help on fighting Local Authority John Coughlan (29 Jul 2008 9:45) My Autistic daughter aged 18 is in Condover College studying life skills. Her Disability Living Allowance was stopped as she is a place resembling a care home. The Vale of Glamorgan Social Services advised us to claim Incapacity Benefit so that she would have money to live on. They are now demanding most of this money should be given to them as again she is in a place resembling a care home. They refuse to listen to reason and are even demanding money from Allowances that she does not get. We are at our wits end and would welcome any advice on how we can resist the Vale of Glamorgans attempts to bankrupt us.

ABA Tutor available Surrey/London Surrey Tutor (30 Jan 2009 20:48) Dear Parents/ Carers,
I am a 23 year old female ABA tutor looking for work in Surrey or London. Sadly I don't drive but I'm happy to travel via public transport.
I am a happy, dedicated and enthusiastic ABA tutor with just under one year's experience. I previously worked under a lead tutor from UKYAP and really loved my job. The child I worked with was a 4 year old boy who was verbal. I found that he and I got on really well and I was able to motivate him with songs, stories and silly poems as well as his favourite toys. I was told that I was a creative and exciting tutor and I'd be interested in working with children of all ages and abilities.
I've recently moved to Reigate in Surrey to be closer to my family and am looking for work in either London or Surrey.
If you have an opening for an ABA tutor then please get in contact via email - tannoamice@gmail.com

Our Website Richard P. Milner (9 Apr 2009 22:26) Dear Friends,
We are US non-profit filmmakers presenting interviews on both sides of the vaccine safety controversy as we raise funds to produce a film documentary.
Protect Free Speech. Please donate to watch Dr. Andrew Moulden and Dr. Paul Offit on video as they present opposing views on the connection between vaccines and Autism. The mainstream media regularly presents Offits views, but not Mouldens.
Dr. Offit is an MD, pediatrician, university professor, hospital administrator and vaccine inventor, who has served on federal vaccine advisory committees.
Dr. Moulden, a MD, PhD, neuropsychiatrist and neurophysiologist, is also certified in neuroimaging.
Your financial support is critical to our efforts to bring this controversy to the worldwide public through our website (presenting these and future interviews) and will support production of a documentary film.
Please read more about the doctors, Public Affairs Media and the project, and share your opinions at our site.
Please forward this paragraph with our URL to those curious about vaccines and gather your family and friends to watch. Our URL is: http://www.publicaffairsmediainc.org Best,
Richard

Visiting from US --Need Train/Transport Advice! Autism Mother (16 Jun 2009 15:17) I am traveling to Newport, Wales in a few weeks alone with my ASD child (7) who needs a Maclaren Elite buggy -- big special needs stroller We will have two suitcases and at least two backpacks. What advice do you ahve to travel with an ASD child from Heathrow to Newport? I have to take a train to Wales from London, but was told that there must first be a bus from Heathrow to Paddington. How does one do this? Are there any people who have done this alone witha child (no second parent traveliing at the time) and how so? How do you unload all of your belongings to the bus, then bus to the train? Do you need to walk far, and if so, HOW? If you are already pushing a buggy?
Cheers. Just hit reply--hopefully, your answers will publish on here! Thanks!!!

Hpe it's not too late justin list (23 Jun 2009 12:42) You can catch the train from heathrow to paddington. The heathrow express it's called. It's very quick.
I've take both my asd son and typical daughter on many trips alone and it's okay on the trains generally.
You would probably need a taxi from a wales train station however (cardiff? Swansea?)
