A short synopsis of understanding and working with ASD.
This one-day workshop has been developed primarily to meet the
needs of practitioners new to working in the field
of autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). It combines elements of
theory and practice to give participants a greater understanding of ASD and increased confidence in the
workplace. The workshop is based on the most recent up-to-
date developments in the field, taking into account latest
changes in thinking and practice. As such it presents a positive
and holistic view of ASD, focusing on differences in functioning as
well as difficulties associated with the condition. The workshop
will cover a broad range of topics including: An overview of ASD Main features associated with ASD Causation, metabolic differences and implications for practice Psychological functioning and links to practice Understanding the nature of communication difficulties Addressing communication difficulties Introducing TEACCH and PECS General principles of good practice
Bryan Craig has been working in the field of
autistic spectrum disorders for over 10 years. He developed and
ran the Centre for Education and Training in Autism for the
Scottish Society for Autism from 1995 until 2000 when he took
up a lecturing post at the University of Birmingham. He is now
the Director of Hedghog Training, an agency specialising in the
organisation of autism-specific seminars with international
speakers.
Erica Gould is a specialist speech and language therapist working
in a specialist college for individuals with ASD. She was
previously autism advisor for North Derbyshire Learnin Disability
Confederacy. Erica is the Director of Heghog Consultancy, an
agency that delivers autism-specific training and consultancy in the workplace.
